Serial opowiada o braciach Elric, Edwardzie i Alphonse’u, oraz ich niebezpiecznej podróży w poszukiwaniu legendarnego „Kamienia Filozoficznego”. Wyruszyli w nadziei, że ten magiczny artefakt pozwoli im odzyskać ciała po nieudanej próbie ożywienia zmarłej matki, w wyniku której Edward stracił lewą nogę i prawą rękę, a Alphonse’owi odebrano całe ciało, pozostawiając jego duszę uwięzioną w zbroi.
