Ich codzienne życie obejmuje rygorystyczne testy, ale po ich zakończeniu mogą bawić się na świeżym powietrzu. Muszą przestrzegać tylko jednej zasady: nie wolno opuszczać sierocińca. Jednak pewnego dnia dwoje najlepszych uczniów, Emma i Norman, wyrusza poza bramę i odkrywa wstrząsającą tajemnicę stojącą za całym ich istnieniem. Wykorzystując swoją bystrość, dzieci muszą współpracować, aby jakoś zmienić swoje z góry ustalone przeznaczenie.
